Why Most Shapewear Jeans Fail

In our quest for the perfect shaping pants we tried on countless pairs of shapewear and shapewear pants. While each had something that it supposedly claimed to do (tummy tuck, booty lift, smooth & enhance curves) we often felt like the support or lift was minimal or that each style was limited to only one feature that it would address.

Everything we found either had minimal support or would only address one issue area. We wanted the full package: maximum support and style that holds you in, moves with you and looks great!

The Problem with Spandex-Packed Denim

The jeans that claim to compress your pooch use a ton of spandex that is woven throughout the fabric of the entire pant.

§  Overtime this spandex wears out like an old bikini and begins to sag with no recovery (in technical fashion terms, this means it looses its shape when stretched and doesn’t snap back to the original structure). The end result, that pesky, pooch-y, front belly apron starts to peek back out. 

§  After multiple washes the fabric starts to show streaky lines throughout the jeans; and the fabric wears out, starting to pile & thin out. Our eye for detail could not look past these major quality flaws.

§   The spandex heavy fabric limits the variety of styles. In order for the style to do its job, it has to be very fitted in the waist, which works, but when the fabric opens up in the leg it can get quite drape-y and unstructured. This limits it to a skinny leg, a boot-cut/flare or a wide leg that tends to be more flowy than structured. But we wanted more on trend variety - a structured, chic wide leg, a classic straight leg, or a playful and trendy barrel leg.

§  And worst…these were ALL PULL-ON…we felt like we were in our toddler’s jeggings! We wanted modern woman, premium denim jeans that buttoned, zipped, and actually supported us.

So, we kept looking…and did find some that had real buttons & zippers…but these all fell flat in their claims to tuck your tummy and lift your booty.

Functional Flys that Fell Flat

Flimsy power mesh only gave the illusion of support.

The supposed shapewear pants we found that buttoned & zipped like the modern woman structured jeans we were searching for, had shapewear “panels” made from flimsy power mesh placed behind the front and back pockets in the pants. While this was not visible unless you turned the pant inside out, it left us with inconsistent and minimal support. With a pooch that spreads across our entire front stomach and a booty that gravity is getting the best of, these merely gave the illusion (or psychological placebo effect) of doing something.
